Traditional Medicine and Medical Treatments

Traditional medicine is widely known by the people of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate, such as jamu (herbal medicine made from natural materials). Jamu gendong is the term used by the seller usually woman on the street by carrying a refreshing drink in the back.

There can be founf in the Palace the herbal medicine-making manual book called Kitab Primbon Betaljemur Adammakna and Catatan Jamu Tradisional (Notes of traditional medicine). It summarized a variety of herbal medicines, how to make, and its advantages. Some of these herbal medicines, such as: jamu beras kencur, jamu cabe puyang, jamu for pregnancy, jamu for menstruation, and jamu for the elderly.

Here's an example of how to make and the advantages of jamu beras kencur and jamu cabe puyang.

1. Jamu Beras Kencur


jamu beras kencur is efficacious to relieve and to cure aches and pains due to fatigue at work. In addition, it is also efficacious as an appetite enhancer.


The basic commodities for making of jamu beras kencur are rice and greater galingale herb. Besides these two materials, it is often mixed with others, such as ginger rhizome, kapulogo seeds, tamarind, turmeric, lemon, and nutmeg. And it is usually mixed with palm sugar and white sugar to make it sweet.

 How to make

First step is frying the rice with sangan technique (radiation heat), then pounded until become powder. Then the other materials according to composition are blended with a rice pounder or stone. These two ingredients are then mixed, pressed and filtered with a sieve or squeezed with a cloth. Then it mixed into the boiled water. Then, jamu beras kencur is ready for consumption.

2. Jamu Cabe Puyang


Jamu Cabe Puyang is efficacious to relieve and cure aches and pains, especially in the waist. In addition, it is also efficacious to eliminate and avoid feeling numb, eliminating the body chills or fever, and it is best for pregnancy in the old month.


The basic commodities to make Jamu Cabe Puyang are chili and Puyang. Other materials are added, such as: Curcuma aeruginosa, Curcuma xanthorrhiza, ginger, fennel, pulosari, turmeric, pepper, and tamarind. As a sweetener is palm sugar and white sugar. Last ingredient is a little salt.

 How to make

All ingredients are boiled and then lift it and let it to be cool. After that, the materials are smashed using a mortar and pestle of iron or stone. All these materials are then squeezed with a strainer into boiled water. Finally Jamu Cabe Puyang is ready for consumption.
