Conveyances

The Ngayogyakarta Sultanate has several horse-drawn carriages and carts that are kept in Rotowijayan Cart Museum. Before its function as a museum, it was a garage and Palace’s cart service shop, and the buildings around it were gedhogan or stables. Hence, there are 20 horse-drawn carriages became Rotowijayan Cart Museum’s collections, as follows:

1. Kanjeng Nyai Jimat Cart

It is the oldest horse-drawn carriage that belongs to Ngayogyakarta Sultanate. Kanjeng Nyai Jimat was made ​​in Netherlands as a gift from Governor-General Jacob Mossel to Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. This cart used in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I until Sultan Hamengkubuwono III.  It took 4 to 8 horses in same color to pull this cart. It used to picking up guests or to attending Garebeg ceremony. The cart was named "nyai" because under the driver's footrest there is sculpture of women. And it can be found on the back cart there a place for penongsong, an officer carrying the umbrella of kingdom.

2.  Kanjeng Kyai Garudayaksa Cart

Kanjeng Kyai Garudayaksa is royal cart for the Sultan of Ngayogyakarta Sultanate since the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VI until now. It is made ​​in cart manufacturer Hermansen Co. in Netherlands in 1867. It was only used by the Sultan for carnival, visiting Governor's residence to celebrate Dutch Queen's birthday, or greeting noble guests. The cart was pulled by eight horses had a lot of ornaments, such as European style crown, the statue of mythical animals, and plants. Besides a place for penongsong , it was also equipped with four lights.

3.  Manik Retno Cart

Kyai Manik Retno is one type of horse-drawn carriages with open roof. The cart was used by Sultan to make a pleasure trip. This cart has two seats, one for Sultan who also has functions as a driver, while other seat for penongsong. The cart is made ​​in Holland in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IV.

4.  Kyai Wimono Putro Cart

This cart is made ​​in Barendse factory in Semarang during the reign of Hamengkubuwono VI. The cart is pulled by six horses and decorated with four light crystals. In ancient times, this cart was used by Crown Prince to attend the official ceremony of the Kingdom.

5.  Kyai Jongwiyat Cart

Kyai Jongwiyat cart was used in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII. It was made ​​in cart factory Hermansen Co ML. in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1880. This is a horse-drawn carriage with an open roof type, has four wheeled and pulled by four horses. This cart was as a commander’s vehicle.

6.  Kyai Rata Pralaya Cart

Kyai Rata Pralaya is a hearse for the Sultan and his sons and daughters that made ​​in Rotowijayan, Yogyakarta, in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII in 1938. When carrying the corpse of Sultan, this white-painted horse-drawn carriage pulled by eight horses, whereas pulled by four horses when bringing the Sultan's sons or daughters.

7. Kyai Jatayu Cart

Kyai Jatayu  is the first horse-drawn carriage that serves as a vehicle for the Prince to attend non-formal ceremony. The cart is pulled by four horses, was made ​​in Rotowijayan, Yogyakarta, in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII in 1880.

 

Beside those horse-drawn carriages, Sultan Hamengkubuwono X also has some cars, as follows:

1. Mercedes-Benz Avantgarde

This black car is Sultan's favorite car. It was often used in some trips without using private driver.

2. Mercedes-Benz ML-Serie

3. Toyota Alphard

This black car has Police Number AB 10 HB which shows that this is the car for Sultan Hamengku Buwono (HB) X (10).

4. Toyota Crown

This is the first official vehicles for Sultan Hamengkubuwono X as the Governor of Special District Yogyakarta (DIY) which produced in 1991. It is a car from Paku Alam VIII legacy. Toyota Crown was an official car for Sultan Hamengkubuwono X from 1999 until 2002.

5. Toyota Camry

The car with Police Number AB 1 is also an official car for the Sultan. The number 1 shows that the Sultan Hamengkubuwono X is the number 1 in the province of Special District Yogyakarta (DIY).
